Freediver (Academic & Pool Sessions)
This entry-level course provides all the academic and pool sessions required to prepare you for your open water freediving certification dives.

When you become an SSI Freediver, you open the door to worldwide freediving opportunities. Learning to freedive with SSI is easier than you think.
In this program, academic training and pool/confined water sessions are combined to help you become a confident and safe freediver in no time. Following these classes, you will be ready to sign up for open water freediving to complete your certification. Once certified, you can freedive with a buddy in open water up to a depth of 20 meters and explore a variety of stunning underwater ecosystems around the world.
Ages: 12+
Required Swim Ability: Be able to swim a distance of 100 meters without any swim or buoyancy aids.
Session Length: Two, 3-hour academic sessions to supplement online material. Two, 3-hour pool sessions.
Gear needed for class: Freediving gear is recommended for pool sessions and open water, so you can properly train wearing the required gear. Below we outline the minimum gear requirements and recommended upgrades. Contact us for details.
- Low-volume mask,
- Snorkel with figure-8 clip,
- Fins (freediving fins with neoprene socks recommended),
- Wetsuit and Wetsuit Hood (freediving wetsuit recommended)
- Rubber Weight Belt
- Freediving Lanyard
- Freediving Computer (optional)

Certification: At the successful completion of these academic and pool sessions (meeting all performance requirements and completing the final exam), students can be issued a Pool Freediver certification. Certified Pool Freedivers are qualified to freedive autonomously with a buddy in a pool/confined environment up to the depths of their training.
